Australian citizenship symbolises our unity as a nation. It represents a commitment to Australia and its people, the values we share and our common future.
Becoming an Australian Citizen
Australian Citizenship ceremonies are held at the Shire for residents who wish to become Australian citizens.
Citizenship ceremonies play an important symbolic role as this is when you make the Pledge of Commitment to Australia and formally become a new Australian Citizen.
For information on applying for Australian Citizenship visit or call the Australian Government, Department of Immigration and Citizenship line on 131 880.
Citizenship Ceremonies
Each year we hold Citizenship Ceremonies on:
Australia Day – 26th January and Australian Citizenship Day – 17th September.
Other Ceremony dates are added as needed.
Citizenship Ceremonies are normally held at the Shire of Irwin Council Chambers or, if held as part of Australia Day Celebrations, are conducted at the Port Denison Foreshore.
The Shire of Irwin will contact you and send an email invitation to all eligible candidates approximately 4-6 weeks prior to the next ceremony date.
Please make sure you check your Junk folder.
Please be aware Shire staff can only provide information about local Citizenships Ceremonies and not specific advice on becoming an Australian Citizen.
