PLANNING AN EVENT

The Shire is committed to building a strong community and promoting and fostering a healthy and active community. The Midwest region is a beautiful place which provides many opportunities for local people and tourists to enhance their knowledge, appreciation and involvement in the many attractions that abound in the Shire of Irwin.

What is an Event?

An event is typically defined as a planned gathering or activity aimed at entertainment, leisure, or competition. Events can serve various purposes, such as providing social, cultural, and health benefits to the community, while also driving economic gains by attracting tourists and boosting local spending.

They encompass a wide variety of experiences, including sports, entertainment, environmental, and cultural activities, as well as markets and community-focused events. Events can take place in private or public venues, or even in repurposed open spaces. They may be commercial ventures, fundraising initiatives, or free events open to the public.

WHEN IS AN EVENT APPLICATION REQUIRED?

An Event Application IS required when the event has any of the following:

  • Food for sale or alcohol.
  • Amplified music or entertainment.
  • The event is open to the public on Shire land.
  • A road closure.
  • Amusement rides.
  • Structures being installed.

An Event Application Is NOT required when:

  • The event is a private property not for the general public.

If you’re unsure, it’s always best to complete the application and the Shire of Irwin will let you know if no further approvals are required.

EVENT APPLICATION PACKAGE

This document has been designed to assist Council, Sporting and Community Groups and other organisations in the running of public events within the Shire of Irwin. The purpose of this Strategy is to maximise the probability of a successful event and minimise the risk of negative outcomes such as reputational harm, injury to persons or damage to property.

The Strategy aims to provide a clear framework for Council assistance and support to events that enables them to be better guided by the potential value and benefits that events provide to both the community and local economy. It also adheres to a guiding principle that realising Irwin’s potential to be a vibrant, successful, and sustainable events destination will involve the input, support and energy of all stakeholders.

The Shire of Irwin recognises there are significant community benefits in the staging of events. Anyone who organises an event, regardless of whether it is managed by an individual, volunteers or professional event staff, has a responsibility to protect the health, safety and welfare of those who may be affected by the event. It is also the responsibility of the event organiser to ensure he or she is aware of and complies with all relevant legislation.
