The Shire of Irwin gives notice of its proposal, under section 3.50 of the Local Government Act 1995, to temporarily close a section of Milo Road to public vehicular traffic for the Milo Road Crossing Upgrade project. Written submissions are invited before a final decision is made on the proposed closure.
Closure details
Location: Milo Road, from the Midlands Road / Milo Road intersection to the end of the existing Irwin River crossing, Irwin.
Road limits: SLK 0.00 to SLK 0.850, approximately 850 metres.
Proposed closure period: 1 February 2027 to 30 June 2027, weather permitting.
Closure type: Full temporary closure of the crossing to public vehicular traffic. No through access would be available across the worksite during the closure.
Why the Milo Road River Crossing is being replaced
The project involves replacing the existing low-level crossing of the Irwin River with reinforced concrete box culvert structures and constructing the associated road on a new alignment. The upgrade is intended to improve flood resilience, reduce traffic interruptions caused by inundation, lower ongoing maintenance requirements, and provide a safer and more reliable crossing.
The project is supported through the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program. The proposed closure would allow the crossing and approach-road works to be undertaken within a controlled worksite, with public traffic separated from construction activities.
Access during works
Through traffic would be diverted around the closed section using signed detour routes. Motorists should plan their journeys and allow additional travel time. Barriers would be installed at each end of the worksite, and road users must not enter the closed construction area.
Access to properties on either side of the worksite is intended to be maintained from the respective side of the closure. This does not provide access through the construction site or across the river at Milo Road Crossing.
Residents, landowners, local businesses and transport operators with specific access requirements are encouraged to contact the Shire during the consultation period so their circumstances can be considered.
Other information
Traffic management measures would be in place to identify the closure and direct road users. Please observe all road closure signs, barriers and directions from authorised personnel.
The proposed construction programme is subject to weather, river conditions and construction progress.
Any changes to the closure period would be subject to the necessary approvals and public notification requirements. The crossing would reopen once the works are sufficiently complete and it is safe to restore public access.
