SURFING
WA’s Coral Coast boasts one of the most pristine and picturesque coastlines in Australia. If you’re on the lookout for a wave to ride, Dongara – Denison’s scenic shoreline caters to a range of surf abilities.
Located in Port Denison, South Beach is a great spot for beginner surfers and bodyboarders. Vehicle access is permitted south of the entry so if you have a 4wd, cruise down the beach and find yourself a spot… there’s plenty of room for everyone. Aside from two small reefs at the entry, it’s a beach break and works best with light East/Nor East winds. On days when the swell, wind and tide combine picks up, you get some great waves forming and peeling out the front of the cafe carpark. This beach is one of the safest in town during Summer as it’s patrolled on weekends and public holidays by the Dongara Denison Surf Lifesaving Club.
“Home Reef” or “The Bay” is a reef break to the southern side of the marina seawall. Pack some old shoes to walk the reef on a low tide or paddle your shortboard out to a solid leftie that will break overhead in good conditions. Other days it’s a gentle longboarders wave peeling all the way into the tower where you’ve hung your shoes for the walk back.
Granny’s Beach is ideal for swimmers, but your little nippers will have a blast riding the usually gentle whitewater onto the sandy shore. Watch out for the rock wall if they haven’t learned to steer.
For the seasoned surfer, Arurine Bay is locally known as ‘Surf Beach’. When it’s on its on, powerful rights and lefts break in close so watch out for the rocky bottom. It often has a strong backwash on the outgoing tide too but it’s a great spot for on lookers to sit and enjoy the show.
There are other gems for you to find. Paddle out and have a chat with the locals, they know all the best spots.
WINDSURFING
Between November & March “The Doctor” blows in from the South West around midday bringing ideal conditions favoured by windsurfers. This beach has easy access onto the sand and features onsite shower facilities. South Beach hosted ‘Kitestock’ in 2007, 2014 and 2015, which brought hundreds of keen windsurfers and fans from around the world to Dongara – Port Denison.
North of Dongara you’ll find 7-mile beach. This location is a little isolated compared to the town beaches mentioned above. Approx 500m out from the carpark you’ll see the reef breaks encircling the area. Great for a dive in the morning, but it’s all about kite & wind surfing when the South Wester picks up.
